Our Best HAZMAT Cabinets

HAZMAT — or hazardous materials — storage cabinets protect against fires, spills, contamination, and accidental poisonings. Unlike standard storage cabinets, manufacturers build these with specific distinctive features and to certain specifications.

These safety cabinets can withstand pressure, heat, and force much better than ordinary cabinets.

Using the proper storage cabinet is essential for any office or plant safety program to prevent injuries, fires, or health hazards.

State and Local Requirements

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Office of Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) established standards for HAZMAT storage.

The National Fire Protection Association and OSHA have ratings from 1 to 4, with Level 1 being the highest rating and the most hazardous. Labeling your cabinet with the rating of the material inside will provide first responders with critical information in the event of an emergency.

Color Coding

Clearly label your cabinets with the government-approved color code that indicates what you keep in your HAZMAT cabinet. There are four standard colors:

Red – Paints, inks, or other similar combustible liquids.

Blue – Corrosive liquids.

Green – Toxic pesticides and insecticides.

Yellow – Flammable liquids.

How to Identify Your HAZMAT Storage Needs

One of the first things you need to determine before deciding on which storage cabinet to purchase is what type of material you need to store and how much you have.

Our HAZMAT cabinets can store up to 90 gallons of Level 1 flammable liquid.

The material used in the manufacture of the cabinet is important. Most safety storage cabinets are made of durable and long-lasting stainless steel and polyethylene. These cabinets will have a powder coating that is corrosion resistant.

The size of the shelf or shelving makes a difference in terms of the types of containers that will fit in the cabinet. Look for a storage unit that has shelves wide enough to fit any size or shape.

Cabinet Disposal

Once you have used your HAZMAT container for storing hazardous liquids or pesticides, don’t use it for anything else. Gasoline or other flammable liquid remains, and pesticide residue can leach into other materials and cause serious health problems. Safely dispose of it in accordance with your local government or municipality requirements.
