Corrugated Hazmat Boxes

Corrugated Hazmat Boxes Can Provide Secure Shipping Options for many Hazardous Materials

In any industry shipping of materials is essential, but so is adherence to certain regulations. One of these regulations happens to be USDOT 49 – Transportation. According to the Code of Federal Regulations (49 CFR), the transport of hazardous materials are enforced in cases of all methods of conveyance including air, highway, water, and rail. Such regulations are issued by federal agencies and imposed on those agencies by congress itself. That being the case, it becomes very important for you, as the manufacturer/service provider to ensure you are complying not only for the sake of federal guidelines, but also for the safety of yourself and your potential customers.

Shipping Boxes for Hazardous Materials

This is where 4GV boxes come into play. These are also known as variation packaging and ours both meet and exceed and UN specifications. With certification from the Department of Transportation, you can be rest assured that our packaging is extensively tested and allows for greater flexibility when shipping internationally. We have UN approved boxes ready to ship Packing groups I, II, and III Solids or Liquids. Keep in mind that while the boxes are UN compliant, the packaging method must also be compliant in order to ensure an uninterrupted experience.

There are some products which require very specific shipping boxes, even in the corrugated category. Oxygen generators, for example, need to be placed in a rigid packaging which can withstand both flame and heat penetration, as outlined in 49 CFR 173.158. While this might seem a bit strict, it is to ensure the safety of everyone involved, as pressurized oxygen can become volatile in the right(or wrong) conditions.

Understanding 4GV

4GV packing material is commonly comprised of vermiculite, which is a hydrous silicate mineral. Classified as a phyllosilicate, it expands when heated, and is commonly produced in commercial furnaces. There is of course some concern that vermiculite contains asbestos, and up until the early 1990's, this was in fact a legitimate concern. Once the issue was detected, it was ensured that all Vermiculite mines throughout the world would be tested regularly to ensure that products sold contain none of the hazardous material. There was one instance wherein a vermiculite mine managed to form asbestos naturally, but with rigorous testing, it is ensured that the pure vermiculite on the market is clean and non-toxic.

Accessorizing your Packaging

In order for your corrugated hazmat boxes to be ship ready, they must conform to the packaging instructions set forth by the United Nations. Having been tested properly and using Grade 4A vermiculite, you may use accessories such as poly bags, and even 3” water activated tape.
